After 16 years of photographing newborns at my San Clemente studio, one thing I always remind my clients — especially new moms — is this: a fed baby is a happy baby. And while we all most of us are hoping for those relaxed moments of breastfeeding in hopes they are natural and effortless, the reality is that, for many mothers, it doesn’t start out that way.
In those early days and weeks, breastfeeding can come with challenges that no one warns you about. And as a newborn photographer and a mother of 3 myself, I see and know firsthand how those feeding struggles can add unnecessary stress to what should be a joyful time in your life. Let’s talk about it — and why, no matter how you feed your baby, you’re doing an amazing job.

Why Breastfeeding Might Be Tough at First
There’s so much pressure in this world to breastfeed , but the truth is: it doesn’t always come naturally. Here are some common reasons I’ve seen new moms struggle — both from my experience working with newborns and what many of my clients share with me during their sessions:
✅ Low milk supply in the early days – Sometimes your body needs a little time to get going. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
✅ Tongue tie or lip tie – These can affect a baby’s ability to latch properly. I’ve worked with so many families where a simple evaluation and, if needed, treatment made a world of difference.
✅ Sore nipples and engorgement – The physical adjustment period can be uncomfortable, and that’s completely normal.
✅ Baby’s sleepiness or difficulty staying latched – Especially in those early days, some babies get tired fast while feeding, which can make it tricky.

How This Relates to Your Newborn Photo Session
Here’s something I always tell my clients before their newborn photography session: a fed baby is best for photos — no matter how they’re fed.
Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding breast milk, using formula, or a combination of these — it’s all good. The goal is a content, happy baby who feels secure and comfortable. That’s when we can capture those peaceful, snuggly images that you’ll treasure forever.
And here’s the thing — during our session, there’s absolutely no pressure. If your baby needs a break to feed, we pause. If they need to be soothed or rocked for a while, we take our time. My goal is always to create a calm, supportive environment for both baby and parents.

Here are some Tips for Easing Feeding Stress Before Your Session
💛 If you’re struggling, ask for help early. A lactation consultant can work wonders — and there’s no shame in getting support. I have a few lactation consultants I can recommend so feel free to reach out if you’re struggling and need to find one. It’s better to do this as early as possible too. I learned the hard way with my oldest baby. I lost most of my milk before reaching out.
💛 Bring what you need. Formula, pumped milk, nipple shields, pacifiers — whatever helps your baby feel settled. I know there is a lot of talk about nipple confusion with pacifiers, but they sometimes do help immensely during a newborn session to comfort your newborn.
💛 Don’t worry about perfection. Your baby doesn’t need to have the perfect latch or feeding routine for us to create beautiful images. I’ve been doing newborn photography for over 16 years so I will always get you beautiful images of your precious newborn baby.

Final Thought — You’re Doing Great
Whether breastfeeding comes easily or feels like an uphill climb, remember this: You’re doing an incredible job. Feeding your baby, however that looks, is an act of love — and that’s what truly matters.
If you’re planning your newborn photo session, know that I’m here to support you, celebrate you, and help you document this fleeting, magical time — no judgment, just beautiful memories.
