If you’re expecting a little bundle of joy and wondering, “When am I supposed to schedule my maternity photos?”, then you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common questions I get asked from expecting moms here in Orange County, and the answer is pretty simple, but also pretty strategic based on what type of session you are looking to get.
You deserve to feel radiant, relaxed and beautifully prepared – not rushed, swollen and uncomfortable, which may happen if you wait to the last minute to book your maternity portraits. It is a special time that should be documented, not only for you but for the child you are carrying.
So, let’s break it down.
The Best Time During Pregnancy for Maternity Photos

The sweet to capture your maternity photography is between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.
Here’s why:
- Your belly is beautifully round and defined.
- You’re still comfortable enough to move around and pose.
- Swelling is usually minimal
- Your energy levels are more stable, usually from better sleep.
For first-time moms, I often lean closer to 30 to 34 weeks, but of course of everyone starts showing differently at different times, but typically a first-time mom usually takes a bit more time to “pop”. If this is a second, third or even fourth pregnancy you may show a little earlier, so typically we’ll want to do your maternity photography session between 26 and 30 weeks.
Beach sunset portrait session fill up quickly, and I only take a limited number of sessions per month so every client receives the full, guided, luxury experience. Also, if you need a weekend spot, I only book 1 of those per month so that spot usually fills up the quickest, so the earlier you book the better chances you have at getting your perfect day!
Studio vs. Beach Maternity Photos: Timing Differences
This is where strategy comes into play.
In-Studio Maternity Sessions (San Clemente Photography Studio)

If you’re choosing a studio maternity session, timing is a lot more flexible then an on-location maternity session. We don’t have to worry about:
- When the sun sets
- The weather, meaning wind, rain or fog
- What the tides are doing that day
We can photograph you in the studio morning, midday or afternoon even if that sun has already set. That means scheduling will be easier, perfect lighting every time, total comfort and privacy, as well as able to switch outfits more often!
And let’s talk about the wardrobe and my maternity closet for my clients….
I have a large curated maternity closet filled with flowing gowns, fitted silhouettes, soft neutrals, dramatic fabrics and elevated pieces specifically for pregnant moms.
Before your session, we:
- Meet at the studio to choose your wardrobe for the day of your session and go over your partner’s wardrobe as well.
- Coordinate hair and makeup for that day if you choose to use my hair and makeup artist for your session, which I always suggest!
- Design the overall aesthetic of the maternity session.
You’ll walk away from the consultation knowing exactly what you’ll be wearing the day of the session, and feeling confident and prepared. No last-minute Amazon panic ordering, and no worrying about what will fit you the day of the photography session.
Beach & On-Location Maternity Sessions in Orange County

If you’re dreaming of gorgeous sunset images along the California coast – timing absolutely matters the most! For beach maternity photos in Orange County we start shooting about 1.5 hours before sunset depending on the beach chosen. This gives us the magical golden hour light which creates gorgeous skin tones and beautiful dreamy skies.
But there’s one more detail that most photographers don’t think about, and that is the tides! This is especially important at the Southern Orange County beaches. If we’re shooting at the beach, I check the tide charts for sunset and aim for a low-tide evening when possible. This gives us more open sand, reflective wet shoreline and safer access to certain coves. A high tide at sunset may not even give us enough beach access at all and we’ll have to photograph the session from the parking lot!
Because I photograph families within about a 20-mile radius of San Clemente, I know exactly which beaches perform beautifully in different seasons.
How Far in Advance Should You Book Maternity Photos?
It is best to inquire about booking your maternity session late into your first trimester or during your second trimester.
- Schedule your maternity photos for Orange County for 28 to 34 weeks pregnant
- Reserve beach maternity photography dates 2 to 4 months in advance. Earlier if you need a weekend date.
- Studio sessions offer more flexibility, but still should book a minimum of 1 to 3 months in advance to be sure to get on my calendar. If you’re reading this at 35+ weeks pregnant, go ahead and message me anyway. Sometimes we may be able to make magic happen.
What to Wear for Maternity Photos
You don’t have to figure this one out alone. This is a fully guided experience and together we’ll pre-plan:
- Dresses from my maternity wardrobe closet
- Silhouettes that flatter your shape and aesthetic
- Color palettes that compliment you, while keeping in mind your home decor
- Discuss your partner and children outfits for the session.
Your maternity session isn’t just about documenting your baby bump. It’s about celebrating this season of your life. And yes, you will look absolutely breathtaking!
