Every family who calls me asking where to take their pictures assumes there’s one right answer. There isn’t. After twenty years scouting nearly every corner of San Clemente and the towns around it, here’s my real list of the best locations for family photos in San Clemente and South Orange County: the actual spots I send my own clients to, and why.
Favorite Locations for Family Photos in San Clemente & South Orange County
Calafia
This is still my favorite, hands down. It’s one small stretch of coastline off Avenida Calafia, but it gives you three completely different looks without moving the car: start in the wooded pocket that catches gorgeous backlight near sunset, move into the sandstone cliffs for a second look where the carved-out nooks in the rock frame a family perfectly, then finish right on the beach for the actual sunset. Three looks, one parking spot, and none of the stair climbing you’d deal with at a lot of spots in Laguna.

Caspers Wilderness Park
My second favorite, and the only one on this list that isn’t beach. Caspers sits off Ortega Highway (the 74) in San Juan Capistrano, and it’s big. I’ve scouted the whole park, and you do need to drive from one spot to the next rather than walk, but the payoff is a completely different look, wooded and wild, nothing that says Orange County beach town. Good for families who already have beach photos and want something that reads differently on the wall.

San Clemente Pier and the Pier Bowl
The pier is the one almost everyone pictures when they think of San Clemente, and I still shoot there constantly, especially for senior sessions. If we start on Del Mar before heading down to the pier, you get a little bit of that walkable, small-town urban feel before the ocean ever shows up in frame. Two very different looks in one session.

Linda Lane Park and Avenida Marquita
This is the one most people don’t know about. Park on Marquita or at Linda Lane Park and head down through the underpass beneath the train tracks. On the other side you get beautiful rock formations and, if you time it for low tide right at sunset, a long stretch of wet sand that mirrors the whole sky. It’s one of my favorite reflection shots in the all of San Clemente.

The Trails Near San Onofre
I just call these “the trails.” They sit near San Onofre, and on a green, overcast morning they don’t look like Southern California at all. More like Ireland, honestly. The rock formations are different from anywhere else on this list, and there are far fewer people. It’s a real walk if you want to get all the way down to the sand, but you don’t have to. Some of my favorite overlook shots, big ocean, big sky, come from stopping partway down.

Ole Hanson Beach Club
Built in 1928 and sitting right above North Beach, it still has the tiled staircases and palm trees that make it feel like nowhere else in San Clemente. I love it for families who want a little formality mixed in with the coast. You get the architecture and the ocean in the same frame.
Pines Park, Dana Point
A short drive north, and worth it. It’s grassy, shaded by pines, with an ocean view and trees the kids can actually climb on. Parking gets tight when it’s busy, so I plan around that, but the payoff is a softer, more relaxed look than a straight beach session.

Mission San Juan Capistrano
This one takes more planning than anything else on this list. The Mission requires its own photography permit, sessions run in one-hour windows, and fees start around $300 an hour. It won’t be the right fit for every family, but for architecture and history nothing else in South Orange County can match, it’s worth the extra step. The nearby Los Rios District has some of the prettiest storefronts in the area. I use it sparingly, a lot of the shop owners understandably aren’t thrilled about photographers setting up out front.
Which Location Is Right for Your Family
Every one of these works. What matters is which one actually matches how your family spends time together. A family that lives at the beach every weekend belongs at Calafia or the Pier Bowl. A family drawn to something quieter belongs at Caspers or the trails near San Onofre. A family that wants history in the frame belongs at Ole Hanson or the Mission. I ask every family two questions before I recommend a spot: what do you actually do together, and what do you want to feel when you look at these in twenty years. The location follows the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Julie Irene Photography shoot family photos in San Clemente?
Most often at Calafia and Caspers Wilderness Park, those are my two favorites. From there I choose between the Pier Bowl, Linda Lane Park, Ole Hanson Beach Club, or Mission San Juan Capistrano depending on the family and the season.
What’s the best time of day for family photos in San Clemente?
The hour before sunset, every time. The light off the ocean goes soft and warm, and it’s flattering on every skin tone and every age in the family. If we’re shooting Linda Lane, I also watch the tide charts, low tide at sunset is when the reflection shots happen.
Do I need a permit to take my own family photos at these locations?
No. Personal photos on your phone or with a friend are fine at every spot on this list except the Mission, which controls access at all times. Permits for paid, professional sessions are something your photographer arranges, not you.
Which location is best for a large extended family group?
Caspers Wilderness Park and Pines Park in Dana Point both give you room to spread a big group out without fighting for space, which matters once you’re photographing grandparents, siblings, and grandkids together.
